5-time Grammy-nominated pianist, composer, arranger, and Emmy-nominated music director and producer, John Beasley makes his first appearance on the show!
He has performed/recorded with illustrious artists, including Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, Hubert Laws, Dianne Reeves, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Wallace Roney, James Moody, Christian McBride, Kenny Garrett, and Kenny Rankin; took the lead as Music Director for Steely Dan, American Idol, Queen Latifah, Carly Simon (DVD) and AR Rahman’s tours;
Beasley is also a prolific composer in the field of Film, TV and Commercial music. He has written music for Paramount, Disney, and MGM’s television shows, including Cheers, Family Ties, Star Trek, and Fame. He wrote the Touchstone TV logo, which is still used today. As a studio musician, he has worked for luminaries such as Thomas Newman, Dave Gruisin, Alan Silvestri, and Carmine Coppola. Today, he is part of Thomas Newman’s core team creating drum and synth programming for James Bond Spectre + Skyfall, He called me Malala, Get on Up: James Brown bio pic, Exotic Marigold Hotel, Finding Nemo, Wall-E, and many more.
Beasley was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Direction for Jazz at the White House. He received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Jazz Instrumental Album for his 2009 album Positootly on Resonance Records.
In addition to releasing numerous albums as a leader, Beasley has released 2 albums with his 15 piece big band MONK’estra. Both albums MONK’estra Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 were nominated for Best Large Jazz Ensemble at the Grammys, with the tracks Ugly Beauty/Pannonica and Ask Me Now nominated for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Ca Pella.
